What’s that one thing that comes to your mind when we say David Beckham? Soccer, right? After all, very few people can bend it like Beckham. But, it’s not just football that he’s obsessed with. The man allegedly can’t do without counting the cans of cola in his fridge and he has to make sure that bottles are in even numbers. He even has to place the magazines in straight lines! Then there’s the case of Cameron Diaz who opens doors with her elbows to avoid germs! Well, if you think these are just celeb quirks, think again. ‘Cos such obsessions are called obsessive compulsive disorders or OCDs. Just look around and perhaps at yourself too for variations.
There are several factors that can give way to OCDs – from biological and genetic to psychosocial ones. The lack of a neuro - chemical called serotonin in the brain is the biological cause for OCD while past history of the condition in the family is the genetic factor. Research has proved that children of a person with OCD have a greater chance of developing OCD than someone with no family history of the disorder. The way out? Medication as well as cognitive behavior therapy – a technique that is based around helping you understand, manage and change your thoughts and actions.
It becomes vital to understand the difference between OCD and obsessive – compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). “You might have obsessive thoughts or you might end up acting compulsive at times but that doesn’t make an OCD. There are many who suffer from mild obsessions but that doesn’t stop them from leading normal and healthy lives. However, If you are suffering from an OCD, obsessive – compulsive thoughts and behaviors become a part of your life and even cause distress and may go on to interfere with your daily routine, job as well as relationships.
