There are several factors that can give way to OCDs – from biological and genetic to psychosocial ones. The lack of a neuro - chemical called serotonin in the brain is the biological cause for OCD while past history of the condition in the family is the genetic factor. Research has proved that children of a person with OCD have a greater chance of developing OCD than someone with no family history of the disorder. The way out? Medication as well as cognitive behavior therapy – a technique that is based around helping you understand, manage and change your thoughts and actions.
It becomes vital to understand the difference between OCD and obsessive – compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). “You might have obsessive thoughts or you might end up acting compulsive at times but that doesn’t make an OCD. There are many who suffer from mild obsessions but that doesn’t stop them from leading normal and healthy lives. A study designed to look at the combined effects of music and short-term exercise on mental performance found that listening to music while exercising helped to increase scores on a verbal fluency test among cardiac rehabilitation patients. The study carried out by psychologists at the Ohio state of university was reported in the journal Heart & Lung.
The study included 33 men and women in the final weeks of a cardiac rehabilitation program. Most participants had undergone bypass surgery, angioplasty or cardiac catheterization. The researches asked participants to complete a verbal fluency test before and after two separate sessions of exercising on a treadmill. The workouts were scheduled a week apart and lasted about 30 minutes. Participants listened to classical music during one of the sessions.
The researchers tested each person’s verbal fluency before and after each exercise session by asking participants to generate lists of words in specific categories. This kind of task challenges the part of the brain that handles planning and abstract thought as well as a person’s capacity for organized verbal processing.
Participants reported felling better emotionally and mentally after working out regardless of whether or not they listened to music. But the improvement in verbal fluency test performance after listening to music was more than double that of the non-music condition.read summary...

For the first time scientists have identify a new genus of living African primate. The monkey was dubbed Rungwecebus kipunji for home range of Mt. Rungwe in Tanzania.

Scientists first described the Kipunji in 2005 and noted that it differed in appearance and behavior from other known species of monkeys. They first classified it in the genus Lophocebus, which includes three other species of monkey called Mangabeys. However, that classification was based only on field observations and photographs.
In August 2005, a farmer found a monkey matching the description of the Kipunji dead in a trap and turned the carcass over to the Wildlife Conservation Society in Tanzenia and the Field museum of Natural History in Chicago. The Field Museum sent the muscle tissue samples for genetic analysis. Genetic evidence showed that the kipunji is more closely related to Baboon in the genus Papio than to members of the genus Lophocebus.

However, both field observations and analysis of the animal’s physical characteristics revealed multiple differences between the Kipunji and Baboons. It could not be classified in either the genus Papio or Lophocebus, hence the birth of the new genus Rungwecebus.read summary...

In 1946, Percy Spencer, an engineer and inventor, who held more than 120 patents, was conducting radar related research. While testing a new type of vacuum tube – the magnetron – he noticed that a chocolate bar he had been carrying in his pocket had melted. Intrigued, Spencer began conducting more experiments. He watched popcorn “pop” and bounces around the room when he held a bag of uncooked kernels up to the tube. Next, Spencer observed a raw egg placed next to the magnetron explode from the pressure that had built up inside.

Spencer concluded that each of the items had “cooked” when exposed to low-density microwave energy emitted by the magnetron. Raytheon engineers’ quickly adapted his discovery, and the first commercial microwave oven, the “Radarange”, began its move into household kitchens the following year.read summary...
