Here’s a quick test: What did you have for dinner last night? What did you wear to work yesterday? Which class is very interesting yesterday? What you talk with your girl friend? If you took more than five minutes to answer these questions, it’s time you started paying a little attention to your humble brain that’s always in overdrive.

SHOO AWAY STRESS

Nothing bogs down your brain as much as stress. A McGill research suggests that impaired memory has more to do with stress. In fact, chronic stress leads to depression. So, make sure that you don’t let anything negative dominate you. Take time out for yourself from work. Practice deep breathing and yoga. Meet old friends. Indulge in activities that make you happy. Stop worrying too much!

THE BRAIN WORKOUT

Keeping the brain active also increases its strength. Psychiatrist Dr.Sanjay Chugh says, “Solving crosswords and mind puzzles like Sudoku act like stimulants for your brain and can do wonders to enhance your mental ability.” If puzzles aren’t your cup of tea, try books.

FEED YOUR MIND

Since your brain is always on, it’s time to give it a special treat. After all, it also deserves the right balance of nutrients. Reduce your intake of foods high in fats and cholesterol. Vegetables such as spinach, broccoli and beet and fruits, like plums strawberries, oranges and grapes are good brain foods.

DON’T WEIGH ME DOWN

Obesity is a silent killer. We all know that. But did you know that excess weight can also cause brain drain? A study conducted at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm confirms that those who are obese are twice as likely to suffer from impaired memory in later life. Eat well (but moderation) and keep a tab on the diet balance. Make your workout your religion – walk, skip, cycle, swim, ride, dance, jog!
